Day 1 of chasing adventure in Kisumu had to continue with Kisumu Museum a short ride away.

Unlike the modern museum where you have a big building displaying the artifacts, in Kisumu Museum the displays are in different buildings and some are outdoor. For whatever reason, the entrance fee of KES 100/= went to the county.

The first section was the Kisumu Museum Music and Legends exhibition. The exhibition involved a display of old musical instruments previously used and yes they had the famous “isikuti” drum.

Display

Interesting bit on the music section is there was a walk in studio to try and see if my ancestors were really musicians or that I should move to the next exhibition. The latter indeed.

Moving along to the legends bit, none other than the great Luanda Magere whose story resembles Samson (from the Bible) but his weakness was in his shadow as his skin was tough and could not be pierced.

It was at this point I chose to get a guide and did it bear the fruits. I highly recommend you get a guide when you visit the place, otherwise you may not enjoy it.

The next exhibition hosted the cultural part of the museum and the guide comprehensively covered the origins of the Luo, Kuria and Luhya tribes. From their way of life to the clothings and accessories. Everything to understand the 3 communities was present.

Some artifacts

Moving along to the outdoor exhibition areas, there was an interesting area where it showed how the Luo household should be set up according to their customs. It wasn’t surprising to hear that the Luo are allowed 3 wives…no wonder these guys are bloody romantics!

I couldn’t cover the whole place in pics so i did a video, and yes the first wife’s house is at the straight ahead when you walk in the compound.

When I thought it was all over. There is an additional aquarium area where they showcase fish found in Lake Victoria, and a snake park with various snakes on display. After this I headed to the Hideout Bar and Restaurant for lunch and since this is not a food blog, look at the view from my lunch spot.
